Where We Live – Newport Rhode Island Photographer
**These photos are not in fact from Newport, Rhode Island but from our current location of Okinawa, Japan. Trying to get my business prepared for our big move next month**
It’s time for another month of our Where We Live blog circle. I had so much fun last month compiling photos and really enjoyed getting another set together this month. Last month I focused on the beauty this island has to offer and I wanted a different approach for this month. Not only is the landscape here beautiful, but the people here are beautiful and amazing as well. I have so enjoyed getting to know them and have had more than a handful of occasions where laughing got us both through the conversation we were trying to have!
I’ve done a couple of running races and they take dressing up for a race to a whole new level here in Japan! Running an entire 13.1 miles as scuba Steve and Where’s Waldo takes some guts! I had way more fun seeing all those characters than actually running the horrible 13.1 miles…
We have our favorite activities and food stands that we like to visit and always get a friendly smile and wave and even learn some Japanese words along the way. Who knew that ordering chicken on a stick would entail hand gestures and lots of pointing. In the end when we both figured it out there was much clapping and smiling. I’m not sure what my youngest is going to do without her yakitori fix at a roadside stand on a regular basis.
There are those that as I walk along on solo and group photo shoots, start giving me a thumbs up and big smile when I hold the camera up to take their photo. Many times the people I encounter give a shy little “oh no, no picture”, but then when I tell them I really want one of THEM then they put down their guard and give me a smile willingly. Oh how I wish I had the language skills to also have a little chat with them ala Humans of New York! I would love to get a little snippet of a back story, like “do you pack up all of your camping gear during a storm and/or typhoon?”!!
This guy followed me around during a photo shoot and was kind enough to allow me a photo. I went back to that photo location a week later and when he saw me drive through he gave a quick nod, then realized he knew me from the week before and gave the biggest grin and wave to me! Truly made my day!
Then there’s this guy. I spotted him the first week we moved into base housing and was mesmerized ever since. He works in a small garden about 1/4 mile away from our base and he is on the road to the commissary (grocery) and post office, which means the residents of our base see him every day. And he’s out there every.single.day without fail. Even in the dreaded heat and humidity of Okinawa he is there in this exact outfit doing his gardening. I’ve wanted a photo of him for 2 years and was so afraid he would be mean and grumpy and say no. Finally I got up the nerve when a friend texted me and said he was leaning against the wall where I wanted the photo anyway. So I did what any grown adult would do – I grabbed the resident 9 year old of the family and made her go with me to ask him!! Not only did he say yes, but he was the sweetest and most precious man ever! I love him even more now. I ordered a photo for him to frame and am heavily persuading my good friend to go with me who speaks Japanese so we can find out more about him. He is so well loved by our base and he doesn’t even know it!
Now head on over to Kelley’s blog to see what she has this month!
