Prepping for Your Session – San Diego Family Photographer
So you’ve looked at my work and considering reaching out for your session; or you’ve sent the initial inquiry; what next?!
Am I a Good Fit For You?
I’m confident that families look through my work first to see if my session and images align with what you are looking for in their session. When I’m not you move on and when I am hopefully you’ve sent me an inquiry for your session! I like to ask several questions as well in my responses to get more information on family size, ages, occasion, etc. if it’s not already included in the initial outreach. I want your family to know what you are getting with a session with me so I try to include as much information as possible.
Where Should We Go?
A good amount of families/couples/seniors have an idea of the backdrop they want for their session when they inquire with me. Whether it’s beach, in home, urban or open field/park like setting to name a few, there are so many beautiful options in the San Diego area. I give input on locations with a location guide I send to families based on ages of children, tide schedule for the date desired and time of year. There is usually much discussion on this as we go back and forth on what might be the best fit for your family. I want the location to be part of your story as we tell it through your session.
What To Wear, What To Wear!!
This is the next great challenge – what on Earth does everyone wear?! This is another area I’m happy to give input on if needed! I have a Pinterest board set aside with color and pattern idea, clothing ideas, etc. I always, always recommend that families wear complementary colors and patterns instead of matching altogether. This photographs so much more cohesive and shows off personalities versus everyone looking exactly the same. I love outfits with movement too as I have families moving a lot during sessions and it just looks amazing with movement and textures. With that said, I also don’t want you to be uncomfortable because that definitely shows when a family is not feeling their outfit at all!!
And MORE Questions!!
About a week before your session I’ll send out a questionnaire to get more information about your families members, their personalities, etc. It helps me as I prep for your session to know who I need to spend a little extra quiet time with before they are comfortable with me, who is going to do a song and dance immediately and how much convincing I need to do with dads/husbands that I’m pretty fun and don’t want their hour with me to be painful – haha!
The Day of Your Session
It’s the day of your session and everyone’s excited, right?!! Haha! Please. I’m a mom and wife and I know better. The 4 year old now wants to wear something different, dad would rather watch the football game and your normally happy go lucky child woke up on the wrong side of ALL. THE. DANG. BEDS!!
It’s ok I promise. I like to get those “grandma” or “everyone look at me and smile nicely” photos out of the way first. Once I get a handful of those then we’re off to the fun races. We play, tickle, snuggle, sing, make noises, play in the water and when needed, take a little break to re group and come back together. The best compliment I get is “that was so much more fun than I thought it would be”. That means the most to me. Well, you LOVING your photos means the most; but that is right behind it for sure!
And there you go. This is what you get with a session with little old me. That and dumb jokes, me getting drenched at the beach, singing completely out of tune and generally making a fool of myself all in the name of having fun at my “job”!!
