EVOL this Session So Much – Carlsbad Family Photographer
I’ve been with the Spectrum Inspired organization for a while now, but it wasn’t until we moved back to the states last year that I began receiving referrals. Since the beginning of the year, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing 3 local families now who have a child on the spectrum. The idea behind these sessions is that it gives families the opportunity to have family photos done on their terms, on their turf and with a photographer who can provide a lifestyle and documentary session to capture families on their journey.
When I called Wendy to discuss her family’s session, we tossed around various ideas that would work for their family and especially Luca. We decided to start at their house so their children could get to know me a bit and take a few backyard photos, then move on to one of their favorite activities – a walk on the trail near their house. I loved this idea and luckily we had one of the most beautiful afternoons/evenings to boot!
I read the biography of Wendy’s family prior to contacting them and I love how she and her family chose to focus on Luca’s Autism diagnosis.
Luca has a very unique way of looking at the world. At four years old, he noticed how words on glass doors and windows were written in reverse when seen from the other side. He then came home and wrote LOVE backwards on our planter boxes. As his Mom, I thought and said, “that’s wrong. We’ll erase it and write it again. He informed me that it wasn’t wrong. He said, “I wrote it that way so the plants could read it from the inside”. For full story, watch our video or visit #EVOL blog. We love this way of thinking and wanted to create a brand to embody and share it. This is why everything is written backwards! So that the messages are for you, not to impress someone else, not to compare and not to judge, but for you to feel the LOVE!
I could not love this more!! Yes, pun intended.
Wendy and her family created I Am Love, a website and shop dedicated to changing perspectives and practicing tolerance in our world and with others. I love this message so very much!
Our photo walk took us on a beautiful stroll near their neighborhood, with lots of exploring and Luca keeping us all on task and on time during our walk. We still made time for twirling, climbing running. Luca and his sister Aviana were so quick to warm up to me and include me on their trail walk and I truly felt like part of their tribe for that brief time.
Something I’ve noticed as I have photographed families sent to me via Spectrum Inspired is their calming nature. I don’t know if this came before or after their child’s diagnosis, but I can tell you that I sense it from the time I meet them and feel it throughout the session. I think we can all learn something from them. Slow down, pay attention and have grace. Yes, like all parents, I know they have their moments when things are a bit much, but they are tackling it with so much grace.
Thank you Wendy and family for inviting me into your home and lives for a brief period. It was my honor to capture your beautiful family for an afternoon!
