The great typhoon of 2012 delayed our start to the school year, but today we were prepped, dry (mostly) and ready to go! I always get nervous when we move and the girls start a new school. This is Maya’s 4th new school at the ripe old age of 10; and technically her 5th since she started the same school twice. Ella is starting her 2nd school, but she’s still young, give her time!
As someone who never moved from the time I entered kindergarten until I graduated high school, the changing of schools is entirely new territory to me. I think I get more nervous than they do. Nothing makes me tear up faster than giving my strong, but sensitive 10 year old a kiss and telling her every year “you’ll be great-they’ll love you”; and she looks at me with her chin quivering saying “okay”. Oh the soft hearted mama in me wants to scoop her up and take her home, but I know she’ll be stronger because of this. She always is. She teaches me a thing or two (or 100) every school year.
Ella, well, she forgets that she goes to school sometimes because she is often clueless about life around her. Totally not bad mouthing her; it’s who she is and part of why we love her! It’s also part of what frustrates the heck out of us too. She told me how scared she was, but just as quickly bounced into the cafeteria to join her class and start her day. Cluelessness is a virtue in these instances! She did make me sad for her when she told me “there will never be anyone like Sierra” her best little friend from Virginia. I know she’ll make some great friends though!
So here’s to another fabulous school year, lots of great friends, teachers who are kind hearted and many great memories! Crossing my fingers and holding my breath all goes well.
