We are at 3.5 years in cold weather climates and LONG, LONG winters. We figured out fairly early on that although Terry and I grew up in the Midwest, we are now officially warm weather people. Sure I’m ok with a bit of a chill blast to put a sweater on and a day or two for the girls to play in the snow, but then I’m done. I’m ready for flip flops and sunscreen.
We promised the girls, after the winter from hell in Rhode Island, that each summer we would definitely take a trip to a warm, hot, beachy area here in Europe. Our first summer we settled on the island of Crete in Greece and it did not disappoint!
Oh the blue skies, steamy temps and equally blue waters won us over immediately. Pair that with some fruity beach drinks, endless taziki and digging in the sand and we may have stayed forever if we were allowed to.
We interrupted our sunbathing for a day to head to the gorgeous island of Santorini via ferry. If I could do it all again I think I would have stayed at least one overnight in Santorini to fully enjoy it and get the most out of it. Of course we were there when all other tour groups were and it was madness! To get the chance to walk around in the early morning, my absolute favorite time in any city, would have been magical. That just means I’ll need to head back one day for more time!
I’m pretty sure one of our favorite parts of Oia was watching the donkeys come up the path and walk through the village. We appreciated the path and steep hill they walked up after we did it ourselves and nearly lost a couple of Paustenbaughs as heat casualties. It was HOT and we were longing for our beach chair and apartment pool.
We subjected the girls to more torturous walking around and touring after spending some time in Rethymno and then again experiencing a settlement that dates back to 7000 BC. Terry and I were of course impressed; Ella, not so much…
Such an incredible island and we didn’t even scratch the surface of all there was to see and do there. It was definitely our happy place. Beach, sun, warmth and pool. It’s the perfect combo for our little family!
